Speaking to G20 leaders for the final time on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump used the opportunity to defend his decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, a move that took effect on Nov. 4 a day after the U.S. election.

Trump said, without offering any evidence, that the air in the U.S. was seven per cent cleaner than it was when he took office and that U.S. renewable energy capacity had increased by more than 30 per cent, even as the U.S. became the top oil and natural gas producer in the world.

“Every day we’re proving that we can protect our workers, create new jobs and safeguard the environment without imposing crippling mandates and one-sided international agreements on our citizens,” he said.

Trump’s comments were streamed to the virtual gathering of G20 leaders on Sunday.
