The G20 countries plus Qatar are holding a special summit today to discuss how best to respond to the looming humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. With the departure of foreign troops and the return of the Taliban, at least half a million Afghans have been displaced.
An estimated 18 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance. And the health care system is close to collapse. The shortage of necessities across the country was triggered when key international sources abruptly cut off financial aid to Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. That aid once accounted for the majority of the country's spending. Members of the G20 are set to discuss how to channel money and resources into the country without placing them directly in the hands of the Taliban.
