Guatemala’s congress broken into and torched by demonstrators angry over budget passed in secret.

As the Central American country was distracted – recovering from hurricanes Eta and Iota as well as dealing with the coronavirus pandemic – a budget was negotiated and passed by legislators in secret. The budget cut educational and health spending, cut funding for coronavirus patients and human-rights agencies, but approved almost £50,000 to pay for politicians' meals.

10,000 people came out to protest in front of the National Palace in Guatemala City, against corruption and for the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei.
