France election: Mixed feelings as right wing surge defeated by leftist coalition

Worry and uncertainty were among the many emotions expressed in France after high-stakes legislative elections on Sunday. A leftist coalition unexpectedly beat back a far-right surge on Sunday, but failed to win a majority — resulting in the stunning prospect of a hung parliament in France, a pillar of the European Union (EU).

Experts warn the results could rattle markets and the French economy, the EU’s second largest, and have far-reaching implications for the war in Ukraine and Europe’s economic stability.

“I think the situation is worrying everyone at the moment. But what’s more worrying is the fact that the state doesn’t necessarily respect the lives of the French people by adopting certain strategies to create blocs,” said Christophe Magnan, a consultant in Paris.

“In the end, the National Assembly today doesn’t necessarily represent the vote of the French people but simply represents a state strategy.”

Political analysts say the elections in France delivered a blow to President Emmanuel Macron and could bring on a period of instability, just weeks before Paris is set to host the Olympic Games.
