Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dampened hopes for peace in Gaza, saying Israel will pursue the war until it has achieved all its aims. Netanyahu said a permanent cease-fire would be a “nonstarter”, a statement which seemed to undermine a cease-fire proposal presented by US President Joe Biden on Friday. Speaking at the White House, President Biden presented the three-stage proposal, which calls for a permanent cease-fire and return of hostages held by Hamas. He underscored that the war in Gaza needed to come to an end. Biden stated that the proposal had been submitted by the Israelis, yet Netanyahu’s recent remarks seem to illustrate his opposition to the proposal despite its approval by the Israeli war cabinet.
On Saturday, crowds turned out in Tel Aviv urging the government to accept the truce. The families of Israeli hostages have been protesting for months, demanding that Netanyahu’s government do more to secure the release of their loved ones.
