Hundreds of people fled their homes and businesses in Chad after massive flooding hit the ninth district of N'Djamena on Thursday. Displaced people, many of them women and children, travelled on foot carrying their belongings to set up a makeshift camp.

"I don't know what to do and where to put my family. [The] state must find an urgent solution, otherwise we will be at risk of mosquitoes and the cold. I am afraid that my children will get sick if they stay exposed to the weather for a long time," local resident Thomas Ngueadoum said.

Floods are not uncommon during the central African country's rainy season, which usually runs from May to October in its southern regions. But this year, the rain came early and has been the heaviest seasonal rainfall in over 30 years, quickly overwhelming drainage channels and ponds, leaving parts of the capital N'Djamena navigable only by boat.

Plus, in Nigeria, widespread flooding has killed more than 500 people, left around 90,000 homes under water, and blocked food and fuel supplies, the government said on Friday.

The floods hit 27 of Nigeria's 36 states and impacted around 1.4 million people, the ministries for humanitarian affairs and for disaster management said.
