February 20, 2023: Biden visits Kyiv, North Korea fires missiles, Jimmy Carter, Pete Buttigieg on railroads

1. U.S. President Joe Biden walked around central Kyiv on an unannounced visit, promising to stand with Ukraine as long as it takes, on a trip clearly timed to upstage the Kremlin ahead of the one-year anniversary of Russia's invasion.

2. North Korea launched two more ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday, with the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un saying North Korea's use of the Pacific as a "firing range" would depend on the behaviour of U.S. forces.

3. Washington strongly supports Sweden and Finland's quick NATO accession given steps they have already taken, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, even as his Turkish counterpart stressed the need for more concrete action.

4. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has decided to receive hospice care and "spend his remaining time at home with his family" instead of additional medical intervention, the Carter Center said on Saturday.

5. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said he will call on major railroads to improve safety after a February 3 derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, of a train operated by Norfolk Southern.
