Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, spoke with Global News' Washington Bureau Chief Jackson Proskow as he prepared to step down after more than five decades of service in the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Reflecting on a career that spanned seven presidents, Fauci said: “I came as a 27-year-old newly-minted physician and I’m now a soon-to-be 82-year-old senior person in the biomedical research and global health establishment. So I ask myself, 'What do I have to offer the country and the world?’”

Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, who became a household name and the subject of partisan attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, announced back in August that he would depart the federal government in December.

Fauci has been the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation. He was a leader in the federal response to HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases even before the coronavirus pandemic.
