At least four people were killed and dozens more injured in a bomb explosion that took place during a Catholic Mass gathering at Mindanao State University in Marawi, Philippines on Sunday.

In a statement, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. condemned the bombing, accusing "foreign terrorists" of being behind the blast.

Marcos Jr.’s claims come after Marawi was besieged by Islamist militants for a brief five-month period in 2017.

“During the first reading of the priest, there was a sudden explosion,” blast victim Cris Jurado said from a hospital bed on Sunday. “Everybody started running, and when I looked back, I saw a number of bodies on the ground," he added.

As per the president’s instructions, security around Philippines’ capital, Manila, and southern region has been strengthened by police and military forces to ensure protection of further civilians.
