Ethiopia’s government has declared a state of emergency after a sharp escalation in fighting in the north.
Tigrayan rebels say they have taken two key towns on the road to the capital, Addis Ababa - but that is disputed by the federal government.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, a year into a crackdown on the Tigray region, has now called on all Ethiopians to take up arms against Tigrayan fighters,
Meanwhile, the state of emergency measures allow the imposition of curfews and roadblocks on a country facing famine and with more than two and a half million people displaced.
