Environmentalists in Kenya are celebrating after saving a century-old fig tree, which was scheduled to be removed to make way for a highway in Nairobi.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a decree to save a much-loved tree from being cut down. The presidential decree described the tree, the height of a four-story building, as a “beacon of Kenya’s cultural and ecological heritage.”

The fig tree is also considered sacred among Kenya’s most populous ethnic group, the Kikuyu. Crystal Goomansingh has the story.
