Employers feeling the pinch as balance of power shifts to employees

The balance of power in the labour market has tilted in favour of employees. Restauranteurs say hiring is their biggest challenge this season.

Labour shortages in the highly competitive retail sector were common pre-COVID, they’ve become even worse especially in Ontario where stores were shut down longer than other parts of the country.

Recruiters for white collar positions say employers have been forced to sweeten their offers with more perks. Two or three weeks vacation doesn’t cut it anymore and more money is often a necessity.

Employers who can’t up their offers can try hiring junior workers and training them, but there are no guarantees they won’t go elsewhere in this market.
