Elections Canada held a briefing on Tuesday with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Stéphane Perrault regarding the organization's recommendations report from the 43rd and 44th federal elections.

Perrault told press that spreading voter misinformation should be illegal. He said the goal is to "prohibit a person or entity, including foreign persons and entities, from knowingly making false statements about the voting process, including about voting and counting procedures, in order to disrupt the conduct of the election or to undermine the legitimacy of the election or its results."

"Meeting New Challenges: Recommendations from the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada following the 43rd and 44th General Elections" proposes amendments to the Canada Elections Act that the CEO believes are desirable for the better administration of the Act.

The recommendations will be tabled in Parliament on June 7.
