In Ecuador, another politician, this time a mayor, has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on the eve of national elections.
The vote has been marred by a surge in violence, with one of the presidential candidates killed 10 days ago.

Violence is one of the principal issues in Sunday's ballot, but mounting poverty and unemployment are also at the forefront of voters' minds.
