Security forces were deployed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on Friday, while worshipers gathered for prayers in protest over the recent Israeli government decision to reseal the al-Rahma Gate (Gate of Mercy), one of the Al-Aqsa Mosque's entrances.
More than 40,000 worshippers reportedly joined Friday prayers, while police and snipers were deployed in case of protests.
"The Israeli occupation closed the Al-Rahma gate under the pretext that we would open the gate and that we would defend this gate. Al-Rahma Gate is a part of Al-Aqsa mosque. We are defending Al-Aqsa mosque. The closure [of Al-Rahma Gate] in the Al-Aqsa is illegal and forcible. So, we pray today in protest of this closure", said resident Nasser Quos.
The gate was reopened by Palestinian protesters in February.
