Doug Ford reverses Greenbelt plan

The Ontario government is reversing a controversial land swap plan for the largest greenbelt in the world.

Ontario's Greenbelt is a vast 810,000-hectare area of protected farmland, forest and wetland stretching around the Greater Toronto Area, from Niagara Falls to Peterborough. It's meant to be permanently off limits to development.

Last year, the province took 7,400 acres of land in more than a dozen sections out of the Greenbelt, with plans to build 50,000 homes. But Premier Doug Ford has faced heavy criticism since.

Ford announced the reversal at a news conference in Niagara Falls, Ont. The decision comes after weeks of pressure and two minister resignations.
