Serbian fans waiting for Novak Djokovic's homecoming criticized Australia for what they called a "corona circus," as the tennis star arrived back in Belgrade on Monday.

The world men's tennis No. 1 arrived in Serbia after Australia deported him for not having a COVID-19 vaccine, a stance jeopardizing his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam title.

One supporter who had come to the airport said Djokovic made history fighting "against this evil that is called corona circus." Marko Strugalovic said Djokovic for him was like a saint and "the biggest legend walking on this planet."

Djokovic's case has stoked a passionate global debate over the rights to decline vaccination as authorities around the world push that as the main route out of the two-year-old pandemic.

The 34-year-old was first detained by immigration authorities on Jan. 6, ordered released by a court on Jan. 10 and then detained again on Saturday before Sunday's court hearing. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has called the treatment of a national hero "scandalous."
