After months of speculation in Ottawa and amidst an ongoing pandemic, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has officially kicked off another Canadian federal election, in hopes of securing more support for his government and possibly upgrade to a majority government.

The writ drop comes after several provincial governments have taken the same tactic throughout the pandemic – from British Columbia's John Horgan and his NDP government, to Blaine Higgs' Progressive Conservatives in New Brunswick – all of which have proven successful. But as David Akin reports, Trudeau is still facing questions of "why now?" as COVID-19 continues to loom over all Canadians.

Also, Abigail Bimman is reporting from the first day of the Conservative Party's election campaign, as leader Erin O'Toole opts for a virtual strategy for getting through to Canadians, while trying to evade questions on mandating vaccines for his caucus. Meanwhile, Mike Le Couteur looks at the New Democrat's strategy, and why they see a chance to make a huge comeback after an underwhelming performance in the 2019 election.
