Damage from Cyclone Mocha is still being assessed in Bangladesh where cleanup efforts are now underway, but officials say about 2,000 homes had been destroyed and 10,000 others were damaged on Saint Martin’s Island and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar district.

No deaths were reported but there were several injuries, officials said Monday.

People in Bangladesh’s harder-hit areas described a harrowing scene as the storm ripped roofs off homes and carved a path of destruction.

“Yesterday, when the storm came it blew up the tarp (roof) and walls off of our home. Then we ran for shelter with our children,” said Saleha Begum.

“The wind was so strong that it almost blew people off the ground when they ran.”

At least six people were killed and hundreds more are injured after Cyclone Mocha made landfall in Myanmar over the weekend.
