World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Friday that the COVID-19 pandemic was no longer a global health emergency and said the decision came after the organization's emergency committee made the recommendation.

"However, that does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat. Last week, COVID-19 claimed a life every three minutes – and that’s just the deaths we know about," he said.

As a precaution, he also announced that he was establishing a review committee to develop long-term standing recommendations for countries on how to manage COVID-19 on an "ongoing basis." He also cautioned he would not hesitate to convene another emergency committee if COVID-19 were to "put our world in peril."

The original declaration that COVID-19 was a public health emergency of international concern was made Jan. 30, 2020, with it being deemed a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
