During a COVID-19 update on Wednesday, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeffrey Zients said that 77 per cent of Americans have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine.

He added more than 3,500 organizations of various sectors have adopted vaccination mandates.

Officials were also asked about what the U.S. could face in the upcoming winter, with chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci saying he did not expect they would see the emergence of a variant that would "outstrip the capability of Delta" which makes up the majority of cases in the country. He again stressed people get vaccinated can help prevent new variants from occurring both this winter and into 2022.

This briefing comes following an announcement of the reopening of the U.S. land borders with Canada and Mexico, which will take place in early November for fully vaccinated travellers. A specific date has not yet been announced.

Earlier this week, the U.S. also said it would accept the use of international visitors of COVID-19 vaccines authorized by U.S. regulators, or the World Health Organization. It is not yet known if this will also apply, however, to non-essential travellers from Canada and Mexico. There is also no information yet on whether those who received mixed doses of COVID-19 vaccines would also be allowed entry.
