Covid-19: UK PM says new variant may be associated with higher mortality

According to the prime minister, the number of people in hospital is 78% higher than it was at the peak of the first wave. More than 40,000 people have been infected in the last 24 hours. However, 400,000 vaccinations have been carried out in that time too.
