Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced Thursday that the province would be putting a proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 testing policy in place effective Oct. 1 for businesses and event spaces.

Moe, in a video posted on social media ahead of the announcement, explained the proof of vaccination or negative test requirement would apply for many businesses, establishments and event spaces, though some services would be exempted that "are necessary for every citizen in the province to access."

He also said there would be an interim mandatory masking order effective Sept. 17 for all public indoor spaces, with a target of lifting the order by late October, by which time the vaccine and negative test policy will have been in effect for about three weeks.

The premier also said they would be requiring all employees of the government of Saskatchewan ministries, Crowns and agencies be required to get vaccinated and show full proof of vaccination by Oct. 1. Employees will be required to provide consistent proof of negative COVID-19 tests if they are unable to provide proof of vaccination.

Moe will be joined by chief medical officer of health Dr. Saqib Shahab.

The announcement comes just a day after Alberta Premier Jason Kenney apologized for moving the province from a COVID-19 pandemic to an endemic situation in July, saying “we were wrong.”

Kenney made the apology during a COVID-19 update where he announced the hospitality industry in Alberta will need to require proof of vaccination.

He said he was bringing in the added restrictions “reluctantly.”

Kenney and Moe have both repeatedly said they would not bring in a so-called vaccine passport program, but the announcements indicate a willingness to at least partially embrace the idea.
