British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that the right measures were in place to tackle the surge in COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant, given the high levels of vaccination in the country.

Johnson said new measures were not needed to fight the variant, which he described as "plainly milder" than earlier forms of the virus.

“Of course we'll keep all measures under review, but the mixture of things that we're doing at the moment is, I think, the right one,” he said.

However, Johnson stated that pressure on hospitals would be "considerable" in the next couple of weeks but that the country was in a stronger position than it was earlier in the pandemic.

Despite a huge surge in infections, Johnson has so far mainly resisted imposing new restrictions in England, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the U.K. population. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, which control their own COVID-19 public health rules, have imposed some new measures.
