Quebec Premier François Legault said on Friday his government is evaluating imposing further health restrictions in the province amid the increase in coronavirus cases in recent weeks, and will make an announcement next week.

Legault’s declaration comes as calls grow for the government to introduce a temporary lockdown over the winter holidays. Health-care experts have come out in favour of stricter measures in order to ease the growing pressure on hospitals.

Quebec's schools are already closed for the holidays and most construction work is postponed for two weeks.

The premier said despite his government being focused on the pandemic, it has moved on with many projects and passed 16 bills.

Legault, once again, called on people to reduce their contacts in the holiday season in order to contain the spread of the virus.

The province reported 1,713 new infections Friday and 53 more deaths, according to health authorities.
