Coronavirus outbreak: White House confirms Trump taking hydroxychloroquine; comments on WHO letter

Speaking to reporters in Washington, DC on Tuesday, Kayleigh McEnany, White House Press Secretary, confirmed to reporters that U.S. President Donald Trump had, in fact, been recieving doses of hydroxychloroquine.

Trump said Monday that he is taking a malaria drug to protect against the new coronavirus, despite warnings from his own government that it should only be administered for COVID-19 in a hospital or research setting due to potentially fatal side effects.

“I started taking it, because I think it’s good,” Trump said. “I’ve heard a lot of good stories.”

McEnany also commented further on a note sent by Trump to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

"That letter really outlines strongly the president’s point of view," McEnany told reporters. "You had Xi Jinping pressuring the WHO in saying you should not declare this an emergency and on the very next day you had the WHO saying in fact that this was not an issue of public health emergency situation, so issues like that when there is a very clear China bias at play should be looked at very quickly as we make our decision.”
