Coronavirus outbreak: Ontario's top doctor says monitoring for concerns ongoing amid reopening |FULL

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe provided an update on COVID-19 on Thursday, just a short time after Premier Doug Ford announced the province would move into "Stage 1" of reopening.

Williams said that as the province begins to reopen, they will be using increased testing and monitoring to determine if there are any changes that are concerning and could signal changes needed to contain any potential spread.

Asked about what number of new cases could prompt a change to reopening measures, Williams said there would be a number of questions to ask should they see a spike in new COVID-19 cases as the province reopens, including where it’s occurring, if it is in a contained area or if it's province-wide, among other factors. If widespread, Williams said they’d need to make a decision on whether to alter reopening measures.

Responding to questions about the new announcement that anyone with COVID-19 symptoms could be tested, Yaffe said the criteria for testing had been changed and communication has been given to assessment centres that anyone who shows up with an appointment, and is showing symptoms, should be tested.

Ontario reported 258 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 21,494. The death toll has risen to 1,798 as 33 more deaths were reported.

Wednesday’s report marks an increase of 1.2 per cent in total cumulative cases, which is part of the downward trending being seen in the province.

Meanwhile, 16,204 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 75 per cent of all cases.
