Coronavirus outbreak: Ontario Premier Doug Ford provides update on response to COVID-19 | LIVE

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, joined by Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams, held a briefing on Friday to discuss the province's ongoing measures to combat COVID-19.

Ford said that they are looking at the idea of a regional approach to reopenings, in conjunction with the expanded testing plan announced earlier that day. He said that more testing gives a better scope what’s happening around the province and can help guide what locations could be reopened sooner. Chief public health officer Dr. David Williams added if they do a regional reopening, it has to be communicated properly so the public respect each other’s jurisdiction.

Elliott more about the launch of the next phase of the province’s testing strategy, saying they’re adding two new branches of testing, in addition to the current testing centre method. She said the first is will be an expansion of surveillance for vulnerable populations for those not showing symptoms at places like shelters and group homes. She added this includes testing of workplaces in priority sectors. The other branch is reserving testing capacity to quickly respond to outbreaks in specific neighbourhoods, regions or hospitals and workplaces. This will include deployment of mobile testing.

The premier also spoke about earlier comments by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looking into reuniting Canadians with close family members living the U.S, saying reunification is “so important” and he supports the idea.

Ontario reported 344 new coronavirus cases and 41 deaths on Friday.

The total number of cases stands at 27,210 and 2,230 deaths as of Friday.
