British Prime Minister Boris Johnson along with National Health Service Director Stephen Powis provided a briefing Sunday regarding the nation's latest COVID-19 numbers and the government's response to the ongoing pandemic.

Johnson defended his top advisor Dominic Cummings after details of a 400 km trip he took during lockdown measures in March came out in the press, sparking controversy. Johnson said Cummings acted "responsibly, legally and with integrity" in travelling to "find the right kind of child care."

Johnson also reported the latest coronavirus numbers for the UK which included 2,409 new positive cases which brings the total number of positive cases to 259,559.

He also reported an additional 118 deaths in the past day bringing the total lives lost to the pandemic to 36,793.
