Manitoba health officials reported a record-breaking 543 new cases and seven additional deaths related to COVID-19 on Monday, the largest single-day increase in new cases the province has seen since the coronavirus pandemic was declared.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Brent Roussin and Manitoba's Chief Nursing Officer Lanette Siragusa provided the update.

During the briefing, Roussin said there were some positive signs being seen in the province, despite the record caseload. He said the average number of contacts per case was dropping, which could help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The province also reached another grim record Monday, with an all-time high of 296 people in hospital with 52 in intensive care. Siragusa said as of Monday, 96 of the province's 103 ICU beds are in use. As well, 43 of the 79 patients currently on ventilators are COVID-19 patients.
