The Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that the furlough employment scheme is to be extended to the end of March 2021.

He said this was due to the accelerating rise cases of coronavirus across the UK, and the negative forecasts from the Bank of England.

The rising R rate of infections was, he said, the reason for extending furlough rather than switching to the less generous Jobs Support Scheme.
