Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded Friday to criticism by chef and restauranteur Mark McEwan who criticized the 28-day modified Stage 2 restrictions, saying they are focused on health and the numbers do not show reopening is the right thing to do right now.

McEwan made the comments recently, criticizing the government's response and saying that shutdowns were "a mistake" and called on Ford to "be brave" and lead the province back to work safely.

The premier added they need to balance health and the economy, but they would not have the latter if they just allow COVID-19 to spread.

Ontario reported 826 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 68,353. There were also nine more deaths, increasing the death toll to 3,080.
