COP28 President Sultan Al-Jaber defended his role in hosting this year's United Nations (UN) COP28 climate summit on Monday, and insisted that he understood and respected the science of climate change.
Al-Jaber responded to a Dec. 3 report in The Guardian publication on comments he made last month regarding the phase-out of fossil fuels, which has sparked criticism at COP28.
The Guardian story quoted Al-Jaber from a Nov. 21 online event saying that "there is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what's going to achieve 1.5C."
On Sunday, climate advocate and former U.S. Vice President Al Gore criticized Al-Jaber, saying that "he should not be taken seriously. He's protecting his profits and placing them in a higher priority than the survival of the human civilization."
"I am quite surprised with the constant and repeated attempts to undermine the work of the COP28 presidency," Al-Jaber said on Monday, complaining to reporters that "one statement taken out of context with misrepresentation" had received "maximum coverage."
