COP26: Pikachu protesters call on Japan to stop using coal

During the COP26 climate conference, protesters dressed as Pokémon character Pikachu danced by the river Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland on Thursday, urging Japan to stop burning coal and financing it abroad.

Japan, with its nuclear power industry in crisis since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, has turned to coal to fill the gap and is building seven large new coal-fired power stations.

Ayumi Fukakusa, an activist with the "No Coal Japan Coalition" said protesters were demanding the country phase out the use and financing of coal by 2030.

Japan and its G20 counterparts committed on Oct. 31 to stop overseas funding for coal by the end of this year, but set no date for or phasing out coal power, promising only to do so "as soon as possible."
