Survivors of the deadly eruption of Congo’s Mount Nyiragongo volcano are speaking out about the devastation to their lives and livelihoods, after it sent thousands of residents fleeing in panic.
The death toll as of Sunday had risen to at least 32 and hundreds of homes were destroyed.
One survivor said the volcanic eruption destroyed a fence he had just finished building a week earlier, describing the devastation to his property as “a big blow.”
Another woman said she was left homeless and is pleading with authorities to help her find a new place for her and her children. “I don’t know what will become of us,” she told Reuters journalists.
