Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, alongside other state officials, provided an update on Wednesday regarding the situation after flames ripped through at least 9.4 square miles (24 square kilometers) and left nearly 1,000 homes and other buildings destroyed in suburbs between Denver and Boulder last week.

It came unusually late in the year following an extremely dry autumn and amid a winter nearly devoid of snow. Experts say those conditions, along with high winds, helped the fire spread.

Colorado Director of Public Safety Stan Hilkey said Wednesday that it was a “miracle” that only a couple of people were unaccounted for. He said 991 structures were destroyed while 125 were damaged in the blaze.

Hilkey said officials are investigating the cause of the origin of the fire with a number of teams involved.
