Students at a university in central Dakar clashed with police and anti-riot forces for a second day on Thursday after Senegal opposition leader Ousmane Sonko was arrested following a rape accusation.

By law, police are not allowed to enter university grounds in Senegal and therefore could not repel the students at the gates of Cheikh Anta Diop University. The confrontation lasted for hours.

The arrest of Sonko came after hundreds of his supporters clashed with police in the capital while protesting against a rape accusation he denies.

An employee at a beauty salon accused Sonko last month of rape. The politician, who finished third in the 2019 presidential election, was summoned for questioning after his parliamentary immunity was removed last week. Sonko accuses President Macky Sall's government of stirring up the charge to undermine his strongest rival.
