This year's Christmas tree, which will be in place until Jan. 8, 2023, is a majestic white fir that comes from Rosello, a town in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Its lighting takes place as part of a tradition started by Pope John Paul II in 1982.

The Palestinian city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, which is the Biblical birthplace of Jesus, was all but closed for the last two Christmas seasons, losing its peak tourist season to the pandemic. However, this year many people gathered to see the giant tree on Manger Square as it was lit up with hundreds of coloured lights as red, white and green fireworks lit up the night sky.
