China's foreign ministry denounced a meeting between U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-Wen, saying the two countries were "colluding with each other."

"This move seriously violates the One-China principle... and sends a seriously wrong signal to the Taiwan independence separatist forces," Chinese foreign affairs spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday.

"Taiwan officials are bracing for intensifying pressure on the "median line" that has for decades helped keep the peace in the Taiwan Strait, as China begins inspecting civilian shipping across the waterway, which is seen as retaliation for the meeting.

A Chinese aircraft carrier which Taiwan's defence ministry said was also spotted off Taiwan's east coast.
