About 620,000 children in Gaza have been out of school for nearly eight months. When the war began, lessons ceased as many buildings run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees became shelters for displaced families. The UN estimates that over 80 percent of schools in the strip have been damaged or destroyed. In Al Mawasi, a narrow, barren strip of land designated an evacuation zone by the Israeli army, tents are being used as makeshift classrooms.

Al Jazeera’s Michael Appel reports. To discuss this further, we are joined by Ricardo Pires, a spokesman for UNICEF, the UN's children agency.
