Canada expands early pension eligibility for CBSA officers, paramedics, frontline workers

On Thursday, Canada's Treasury Board President Anita Anand announced legislative changes to expand early pension eligibility to frontline workers. This includes firefighters, paramedics, correctional service employees, parliamentary protection officers, search and rescue technicians and border services officers.

"These proposed changes will provide consistency to how the pension plan recognizes the demanding nature of day to day duties for these occupational groups, who have an absolutely critical role in promoting and protecting the safety and security of the population of our country," Anand said.

She added that the rationale for the changes is due to the "demanding and risky nature" of the jobs, as well as "demanding" training requirements and a "lack of opportunity" for public service mobility.

This update comes on the heels of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) averting a strike as their union, Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), reached a tentative contract agreement with the federal government.
