Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos spoke Tuesday after the Canadian government passed legislation banning cosmetic testing on animals in Canada.
Duclos made the comments Tuesday during a media availability alongside animal welfare advocates and industry leaders.
He said the legislation would increase Canadians’ confidence in the use of cosmetics and “facilitate trade with countries with similar measures.”
Speaking alongside Duclos, Rebecca Aldworth, executive director for Canada at Humane Society International, called the new legislation “a watershed moment” and “decades in the making.”
She said it was proof of what can be achieved when non-profits, industry, scientists and the public work together.
