Canada’s Governor General on mission to combat hateful online comments

From public figures to the average person, anyone can be a target when it comes to hateful online comments. That includes Canada's Governor General Mary Simon, who has made it a mission to help foster more civility — and says a lack of it has affected her personally.

In February 2023, the Governor General's office disabled comments on her social media platforms because of the abusive, misogynistic and racist engagements — including violent threats — her website states.

Citing a recent conference she convened, Simon proposed several solutions, which included mentoring other people, more mental health support and being an ally.
