The scenes were terrifying, chaotic, fraught with danger, as thousands of people tried to fight their way into Kabul airport to escape the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Affairs Select Committee will debate the UK's handling of the evacuation effort - with an unknown number of people still trapped inside Afghanistan, fearing for their lives.

Some have tried fleeing to a third country - including the risky journey to Pakistan.

But this programme understands that the British High Commission there says they can't help UK nationals who have entered the country without the necessary visa.

We met one British citizen and his young family who got left behind and still can't find a safe route home.

Despite the Defence Secretary saying that in some cases going to a third country would be "a better option", we understand there is no longer a process allowing people who entered Pakistan illegally after November 5th to apply for legal status - something the Foreign office says it is working with the Pakistan government to address.

The Foreign Office also says it will continue doing all it can to secure safe passage to help British nationals and eligible Afghans to leave the country.
