Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro tests positive for coronavirus

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Tuesday that he had tested positive for COVID-19, adding that he was in good health despite running a fever. The president said he began feeling ill on Sunday and has been taking hydroxychloroquine to help his recovery.

Bolsonaro's test result comes after the president repeatedly defied local guidelines to wear a mask in public, even after a judge ruled him to do so in late June. He's also criticized social distancing rules and has downplayed the severity of the virus, which he has called "a little flu."

The World Health Organization's director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Emergencies Program director Michael Ryan both wished Bolsonaro a fast recovery on Tuesday, and stressed his positive test shows that "no country is immune" and that everyone is potentially exposed to the virus, with Ryan stating "we are all equally vulnerable."
