Hundreds rallied in central Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, to mark the first anniversary of the assassination of city councilor Marielle Franco, just a day after the police announced that they arrested two suspects.
Franco, a popular politician, who was known for her stance against police brutality and violence in the favelas, was shot dead alongside her driver Anderson Gomes on March 14, 2018.
The two men arrested were named as Ronnie Lessa and Elcio Vieira de Queiroz. According to the investigators, Lessa was the man responsible for shooting Franco and Gomes, while Queiroz was the driver.
After his arrest, a photo of Queiroz with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began to circulate. Queiroz met with Bolsonaro in 2011. In addition, Lessa's daughter dated one of Bolsonaro's son. However, the police are currently not investigating these ties.
