U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday in a national address from the Oval Office that support for Israel and Ukraine is “vital for America’s national security,” making the case for deepening U.S. involvement in the two unpredictable foreign conflicts as he prepares to ask for billions of dollars in military assistance for both countries.

Biden said that if international aggression is allowed to continue, “conflict and chaos” could spread throughout other parts of the world.

“Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: they both want to completely annihilate a neighbouring country.”

Biden said he will send an urgent funding request to Congress, expected to be roughly $100 billion over the next year. The proposal, which will be unveiled on Friday, includes money for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Biden faces an array of steep challenges as he tries to secure the money as the House remains in chaos as the Republican majority has remained unable to select a House Speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy.
