U.S. President Joe Biden said on Saturday he had approved an emergency declaration for Kentucky after the state was battered by a swarm of tornadoes that killed at least 70 people.

Biden has ordered federal aid to supplement the response from state and local authorities, the White House said.

"It's a tragedy. And we still don't know how many lives were lost and the full extent of the damage," Biden told reporters.

Earlier on Saturday, Biden spoke with the governors of five of the states hit by the storms - Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee - to express condolences and a commitment to deliver aid quickly, according to the White House.

More than a dozen tornadoes were reported with the most destructive travelling more than 320 kilometres, according to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
