The B.C. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) is stepping in to rescue and care for any pets who were left behind as people were forced to flee their homes because of wildfires burning in the central Okanagan.

Gailene Askeland, manager at the BC SPCA, told The Morning News on Wednesday that the emergency services team within the organization was able to quickly mobilize.

Askeland said many people in the province may have had difficulties readying their animals, as well as any necessary documentation or medications they would need, for evacuation. Others may have had no choice but to leave their animals behind.

“We’ve got folks that had outdoor pets, like chickens and quail and some others, that they couldn’t pack them up and put them in the car when they were leaving. So they’ve left them,” she said. “They had to – It broke their hearts.”

Askeland said the organization has taken in approximately 126 animals since Thursday.
