As France’s President Emmanuel Macron kicked off Bastille Day celebrations in Paris, troops from Central and Eastern Europe joined the annual military parade in an apparent nod to the war in Ukraine.

Delegations from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria marched ahead of the traditional French military parade, each national carrying their respective national flag.

The countries - all NATO members like France - have been in the international spotlight since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, with many of them sharing borders with Ukraine or Russia.

France's military display was headed up by a cadre of French-made CAESAR self-propelled howitzers - an artillery system of which 12 have been sent by France to Ukraine, with plans to send six more.

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, one of the key events of the French Revolution. The day has become a national holiday in France.
